This "style guide" is among the books with the most detriments(1) of which I can think(2)。 None of us is safe(3) from the damage these charlatans have caused over the centuries。 If you are reading this, you are the only one to that I want to tell my grievances(4)。Not to say English does not follow forms: it does。 Nevertheless,(5) English is the victim of arbitrary crimes here。 How do we regard Strunk and White in terms of culpability? The culprits, it turns out, are they(6)。------------(1) Write This "style guide" is among the books with the most detriments(1) of which I can think(2)。 None of us is safe(3) from the damage these charlatans have caused over the centuries。 If you are reading this, you are the only one to that I want to tell my grievances(4)。Not to say English does not follow forms: it does。 Nevertheless,(5) English is the victim of arbitrary crimes here。 How do we regard Strunk and White in terms of culpability? I like how the language of this book is itself in accordance with the style it illustrates: concise, witty and vivid。 Kalman's illustrations are lovely and thought-provoking too。 I like how the language of this book is itself in accordance with the style it illustrates: concise, witty and vivid。 Kalman's illustrations are lovely and thought-provoking too。 。。。more

A good book to use for English grammar and usage。 I would probably use this more as a referance guide。 It is very helpful。

Writing 101。 They should be teaching this in school more often。 I was assigned this book in AP English my senior year of high school and have never used a book more。

I accidentally read the 1920 edition, not the updated version。 It was a little dated but still had good advice。 I left it feeling more nervous about comma usage than when I started reading, though。 I probably didn’t even punctuate this review properly。 😮‍💨

Jabal

A concise text on rules of writing。

Renu

The last time I studied English grammar was in school。 Since then, I am communicating in English purely on guess。 I did not remember the logic behind punctuation marks and carelessly overuse passive voice。 This book is speed revision of all the English grammar lessons done in school。

Ankita Thakur

More important than the Ten Commandments for any writer worth their salt。

Eric

Classic writing guide on word usage and points of style。 Probably a book worth keeping on my desk and referencing occasionally。

Jason

Tough to review this book as it's essentially a set of rules and some opinions about how to increase the quality of your writing。 I enjoyed it, there were some good tidbits, and I'll certainly refer to it when I'm writing。 Tough to review this book as it's essentially a set of rules and some opinions about how to increase the quality of your writing。 I enjoyed it, there were some good tidbits, and I'll certainly refer to it when I'm writing。 。。。more

I had to refresh my skills with this classic reference book! I know this is a little dated, but it is good to remember what the rules are before you break them。

Probably best summarised in sentence- Somehow relevant, but archaic。

Not that good, but it's just a fine read。 It's not that helpful also。 It does provide for some rules of writing in English language。 However, you can break those rules because they are not definite。I guess, one should still read this book。。。 Not expecting much though。 Not that good, but it's just a fine read。 It's not that helpful also。 It does provide for some rules of writing in English language。 However, you can break those rules because they are not definite。I guess, one should still read this book。。。 Not expecting much though。 。。。more

It's hard to really rate this book, but I'll stick with 3 stars。 There's a lot of helpful advice for writers that is mostly relevant to modern readers。 Reading this really reminds me of how lackluster my English education was-- I am unfamiliar with some of the technical grammar terms, so that made some of the guidance hard to understand。 I did appreciate the glossary in the back for this exact reason。While I did not agree with some of the guidance offered by Strunk, I appreciated the brief and s It's hard to really rate this book, but I'll stick with 3 stars。 There's a lot of helpful advice for writers that is mostly relevant to modern readers。 Reading this really reminds me of how lackluster my English education was-- I am unfamiliar with some of the technical grammar terms, so that made some of the guidance hard to understand。 I did appreciate the glossary in the back for this exact reason。While I did not agree with some of the guidance offered by Strunk, I appreciated the brief and snappy format of the rules。As for my issues-- while some of the examples helped illustrate a point, others were bad。 Some of the "bad" examples were convoluted messes that might not help the reader recognize more natural errors in their own and others' writing。 Other examples would greatly benefit from a breakdown of what's right/wrong or what makes one sentence better than the other sentence。The evolution of language makes some of this guidance feel obsolete or fussy, but I still learned quite a bit。 White's chapter on style made excellent points, but I think it could have been shorter。 Nevertheless, this is a great jumping off point for all writers。 。。。more

Handy reference book to become a better writer。 Cut the fluff and use concise language。

⭐️ ⭐️ Critical Score: BPersonal Score: DReading Experience: 📘📘Very hit or miss。 Some things I totally agree with; others are ridiculous, dated, and dull。 This is a solid reference for the basics of formal writing。 Beyond that, I find it inspires me only in the way of wanting to break rules。

This book is a staple for many writers, a rule book or manual for generations of writers that is studied and cherished。 To me, ‘The Elements of Style’ reminded a lot of ‘Dreyer’s English’: plain and simple rules that are easy to follow yet include some of the author’s humour throughout for engagement。 Unlike Benjamin Dreyer however, I feel as if this book may seem outdated in parts, perhaps in need of another revision as it has already received so many。 Overall, a handy book and essential read f This book is a staple for many writers, a rule book or manual for generations of writers that is studied and cherished。 To me, ‘The Elements of Style’ reminded a lot of ‘Dreyer’s English’: plain and simple rules that are easy to follow yet include some of the author’s humour throughout for engagement。 Unlike Benjamin Dreyer however, I feel as if this book may seem outdated in parts, perhaps in need of another revision as it has already received so many。 Overall, a handy book and essential read for many writers。 。。。more

It is good to familiarize all the rules to write better words, sentences and paragraphs。

Jason Lynch

A short book that is filled with great reminders of quality writing practices。 Why isn’t this the approach taken in beginning writing courses?

Jessica Burstrem

Its greatest weakness was that it pushed some old-fashioned perspectives that I have learned to reject, so then I wondered whether I could trust the rest of it。 At times it is also too brief to be useful to those who need it as a guide。 A linked website with more detail for such cases would help。

Ruth

Very useful guide! Not sure I 100% agree with the authors on some points, but what do I know? I will continue to reference this book, as I am definitely guilty at least occasionally of some of the slip-ups。

Bing

A must-read for any writer, at no matter what level of experience。
